Akira Takayama war nach Abschluss seines Philosophiestudiums an der Waseda Universität (1991-1994) zunächst in verschiedenen Theaterprojekten in Deutschland tätig (1995-1998), kehrte dann nach Japan zurück, um an verschiedenen Tokioter Theatern als Bühnenautor und Regisseur zu arbeiten (1998-2002). 2002 gründete er das Theaternetzwerk Port B, ein Kollektiv, das neue Formen des Ausdrucks jenseits konventioneller Theaterformen verfolgt. Durch Techniken der Neuordnung von medialen Kernstücken, Erinnerungen und Landschaften aus dem urbanen Raum und der heutigen Gesellschaft erforscht Port B die Möglichkeiten des zeitgenössischen Theaters, in ständiger Suche nach den Dingen, die noch kommen.In seinen Theaterstücken und Performances versucht Takayama, das Publikum einzubinden und einen politischen Reflexionsprozess in Gang zu bringen – wie beispielsweise im Zuge des Referendum Project, bei dem er einen fiktiven Volksentscheid über die Nutzung von Atomkraft in Japan durchführen ließ und welches auch in Deutschland Station macht.

It is the truly major Japanese social taboos, which Akira Takayama and his network Port B – founded 2002 – touch on in their artistic work: Japan’s role in the Second World War, the decline of economic prosperity and the insecurities faced by today’s young generations or most recently: the catastrophe of Fukushima. Together they produce performative installations or excursions into public spaces in close collaboration with representatives of various different artistic and non-artistic disciplines. The Complete Manual of Evacuation, first developed and released in 2010 as part of the Festival/Tokyo, served as the main conceptual inspiration for EVACUATE FRANKFURT. The Tokyo project involved all 29 stations along the Yamanote ring line as starting points for individual journeys to different social communities and theatrical ready-mades in the entire inner city.
